Utah Balloon Rides: FACTS about Utah Hot Air Ballooning

How do balloons fly?
Balloons operate through the basic principles of gravity and heat transfer. As air inside the balloon is heated, it rises. As the air inside the balloon cools, it descends. Balloons fly best when it is cold outside. To make the balloon fly, an inflator fan fills it with air, which is then heated.
Can you steer a balloon?
Winds determine a balloon’s direction. Balloonists can steer a balloon, to a limited extent, by adjusting the balloon’s altitude to make use of different wind speeds and directions.
What is the best time to fly?
Balloons fly best in calm, stable air. In Utah these conditions occur during the first hours after sunrise. A hot air balloons performance is increased by a great difference between the temperature inside the balloon and the ambient temperature. Thus, Winter is the best time to fly a balloon.
How long does a balloon flight last?
The actual flight time averages about an hour. The entire ballooning experience, including pre-flight preparation, flight and post-flight celebration, may take three or more hours.
How high do balloons fly?
Balloons typically fly from treetop level all the way up to several thousand feet, depending on what the pilot is trying to accomplish. The world record in a stock Aerostar hot air balloon is over 32,000 feet!
Why do balloons fly mostly in the early morning?
Winds are generally most favorable the first hours after sunrise and the last hours before sunset. The sun’s uneven heating of the earth’s surface causes strong, variable winds. In the morning, it takes a few hours for the sun to heat the earth’s surface enough to generate the thermal activity that creates wind. In the evening, the sun’s intensity has diminished enough to reduce winds to acceptable flight levels. Ideal winds are 3 to 6 mph.
What fuel do balloons use?
Sport hot air balloons carry 20 to 65 gallons of liquid propane in stainless steel fuel tanks.
Who can be a balloonist?
Balloon pilots come from all walks of life. Anyone with the desire to learn to fly a balloon can become a pilot.
How much does a balloon cost?
Like cars and boats, new balloons can vary in size and amenities. Smaller balloons will cost around $30,000. These balloons typically carry a pilot and 2-4 additional person. The larger balloons that can carry up to 12 in addition to the pilot will range between $65,000 and $80,000.
Do you need a pilot's license?
Yes. There are two levels of balloon pilot ratings. The first is a private pilot. The second rating is a commercial pilot. The holder of a commercial pilot’s license may operate a balloon for hire and may give flight instruction.
Who are the pilots?
There are several experienced commercial Pilots working together for your ballooning experience. Bill Howes (Palledin Balloons) and Will Drummer (Skywalker Balloon Company) are the ones that you will meet when going up with us.
How many balloons do you have?
All our pilots together operate about a dozen balloon systems. They range in envelope volume from 77.000 cubic feet to 245.000 cubic feet. The baskets carry from 2 to 12 passengers.
What is all included with a balloon flight or a gift certificate?
The ballooning experience includes pick up from meeting point, the flight, balloonists celebration, flight certificate, and return to meeting point. GIFT CERTIFICATES are valid for 12 months, and make an ideal present for any occasion.
IS BALLOONING SAFE?
Hot Air Ballooning is one of the safest forms of aviation. What is most important to conduct a safe flight is the pilots responsibility to take all proper pre-flight actions. This includes, but is not limited to: Closely observing weather conditions, verifying the aircraft is in proper shape, proper pre- and post flight passenger instruction. If weather conditions do not permit a safe flight, the pilot will not launch, although weather might not look so bad to the casual observer. Our pilots are trained to the highest safety standards in the industry.
