Suunto Vector Altimeter Watch description

Since it's introduction in 1998, the Suunto Vector wristop computer has acted as the altimeter, barometer, electronic compass, and digital logbook for everyone from mountaineers to the Marines. The Vector keeps track of almost everything for you. It is the very tiny instrument panel that could be the key to backcountry survival. This year's Vector adds degree numbers and cardinal half points to the compass bezel, allowing users to make more accurate readings in the field. The Vector's altimeter enables users to track ascent and descent rates, as well as the number of runs skied in a day. This information can be very helpful when determining if you can bag one more descent at the end of a long tour. The watch's barometer allows you to track weather changes and automatically records atmospheric pressure over 4 days in 6hr intervals. Being able to track incoming storms is key when deciding how to prepare for a day of skiing or climbing.

Use a a redundant backup for soaring
Chris de Roulet:

I use the Vector as a backup to my altimeter and GPS(s) in my sailplane. I've set the altimeter warning as a seconday reminder to put my gear down for landing. The altimeter is pretty darn accurate. The only downside is also its' upside...it's a little big, so it's easy to read! Would definitely buy it again...and I have a Suunto Dive watch as well. Good products.

pretty darn good
f2f:

Great conversation piece, looks good and is much lighter than the comparable Polar watches. This piece works amazingly well in the plains and in the Canadian Rockies. Get up in the morning at 1000m, drive 2 hours to 1500m and hike to 2300m -- the unit stayed on target and was within 20m of the real altitude. The reasons Im giving it 4 stars are only two -- if you need a finer-grain altitude information this isn't what you should look for (5m resolution); also, there is no easy way of transferring the logbook to another device.

Sweet!
pmu2556650:

I love this watch. I've put it through the ringer wearing it every day for years now. Maybe someday I'll upgrade to a fancier Suunto watch, but this is really solid. I appreciate having it in the mountains. I check my rate of ascent to estimate my time to the summit. Check my skiing vert/day. Monitor the weather in base camp. Love it.
